Fraser Awarded Wood Badge

Congratulations to Fraser Sampson who was awarded his Wood Badge by Spencer (GSL) at the May Cub Camp at Runways End.

“Wood Badge is a Scouting leadership program and the related award for adult leaders in the programs of Scout associations throughout the world. Wood Badge courses aim to make Scouters better leaders by teaching advanced leadership skills, and by creating a bond and commitment to the Scout movement. Courses generally have a combined classroom and practical outdoors-based phase followed by a Wood Badge ticket, also known as the project phase. By “working the ticket”, participants put their newly gained experience into practice to attain ticket goals aiding the Scouting movement.

The first Wood Badge training was organized by Francis “Skipper” Gidney and lectured at by Robert Baden-Powell and others at Gilwell Park (United Kingdom) in September 1919. Wood Badge training has since spread across the world with international variations.

On completion of the course, participants are awarded the Wood Badge beads to recognize significant achievement in leadership and direct service to young people. The pair of small wooden beads, one on each end of a leather thong (string), is worn around the neck as part of the Scout uniform. The beads are presented together with a taupe neckerchief bearing a tartan patch of the Maclaren clan, honoring William de Bois Maclaren, who donated the funding to purchase Gilwell Park in 1919. The neckerchief with the braided leather woggle (neckerchief slide) denotes the membership of the 1st Gilwell Scout Group”

St George’s Day Service – Sun 22nd April 2012

We are attending the St George’s Day Service on Sun 22nd April 2012 at St John the Baptist Church, Windlesham. Please attend in full uniform and we will assemble on the green in front of the church at 14:30. The service should be over by 15:45.

There will be a collection for the charity Sebastian’s Trust.

Gold Chief Scout Award for Ben

We’re proud to be able to say that Ben Faruqui has achieved the Chief Scout’s Gold Award. This is the highest award available in the Scout Section.

In order to gain the award and badge Scouts need to complete a number of challenges over a period of approximately 2 1/2 years including learning about different communities and cultures, completing a schedule of fitness training, assisting in a community project or charitable work and learning skills to navigate, cook and camp in all conditions. Additionally, Scouts are required to demonstrate that they take part in a variety of adventurous activities from sailing and kayaking to climbing and abseiling and that they can complete a one night away distance hike carrying their own tent, food and equipment.

The Chief Scouts Gold Award challenges young people to do their best in a wide range of events. Ben is one of a small number of Scouts who succeed in gaining this accolade. Ben was presented his award by Robin Hooper, the Assistant District Commissioner for Scouts in Surrey Heath District. Well done Ben.

As previously we have included all families on our weekly parent rota. Please could you make a note of when you are scheduled and if you have a problem with your allocated dates then please can you either swap with another parent or speak to Kate or Andy. Please don’t just fail to turn up as this makes running activities very difficult. A couple of the events need additional adults to maintain Adult/Beaver ratios as defined by the Scout Association, so we have allocated three parents for these events.
